The Right Puppy Food to Keep Your Puppy Growing Strong

Now that you've finally figured out what kind of dog you want and what kind of dog is right for your lifestyle and/or your family. It is time to figure out what kind of puppy food is right for your puppy. Now, when figuring out what kind of puppy food is best for your puppy, the earlier you start the better. Often it is best to ask the breeder that you are purchasing your puppy from, they will suggest what kind of food is best for your puppy and also what they are already used to eating. Otherwise, people with similar dog breeds are great for information and also your veterinarian will give you some advice on what brand of puppy food they suggest. The veterinarian will sometimes be able to give you a sample of the puppy food as well, which is quite the bonus is figuring out if your puppy will eat that brand of food. However, take note that some veterinarian do carry the more pricey pet food brands because they do care about the quality of the food you are going to feed your puppy.

Like anything else you shop for, puppy food comes in all kinds of brands, shapes, quality, flavours, and sizes. Even though that may seem overwhelming at first when you walk into a pet food store, they often have photos of the different types of dog breeds on the bags, making it much easier for you to narrow down your choices. The puppy food is often divided up by the breeds of the dogs and also the sizes. For example, the nutritional needs of a toy puppy breed are different from a larger puppy breed. Also, different breeds have different genetic characteristics and development, so it is important to notice these differences. However, they are certain nutrients that all puppies need because they are in such an important part of their development, what you feed your puppy now can affect the rest of his or her life. So we really want to make sure that they receive the right kind of nutrients as to not complicate they health in the future.

When you are choosing your puppy's food it is important to check the ingredients on the back of the packing. Usually the ingredients are listed in the order of the most to the least, therefore the first ingredient, usually the main meat will be listed first on the package. Make sure that the brand you buy does not include any kind of by products which can be harmful to your pets health. Sometimes if you see a certain brand that costs a significant amount less than other brands, then that is a definate hint that that brand may contain by products, so check the ingredients! The more pure the food you feed your puppy, the healthier he/she will grow and the less problems you will have to deal with later on. We all know that trips to the vet can easily create a hole in our wallets.

Learning what to feed your puppy is just the first step, learning how to feed your puppy is also very important. Generally, there are two methods, one way is to leave the food out and let your puppy eat whenever he/she chooses to. The other method is to set a certain schedule to feed your puppy, usually around the same time you eat would be a good place to start. This way you know approximately what time to feed your puppy since you have your own schedule pretty much set. Also, feed your puppy during the same time you eat can help prevent begging at the dinner table. Some trainers do find that it helps to have a set feeding schedule, that way when you teach your puppy rules and tricks a treat or food is a more effective reward because it isn't available to them all the time.

People often ask when do you switch from puppy food to adult dog food, this really depends on the type of dog that you own. Most vets and breeders would suggest switching after they have reached a year old. However, if you have a small dog, such as toy dog breeds then they may stay on the puppy food longer or not switch at all because they do have higher energy levels and the puppy food provides those suppliments required to sustain their high levels of energy. Best bet is to talk to your vet or breeder because they will know the requirements and characteristics of your dog (breed) the most.
